WESTERN CAPE – The police in the Central Karoo District handed the illicit drug trade a heavy blow with the confiscation of drugs estimated at R660 000 followed by the arrest of a man on the N1 near Prince Albert. The 28-year-old suspect, a Zimbabwean national, is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday, 22 March 2024. On Wednesday, 20 March 2024 members attached to the Flying Squad conducted vehicle check points along the highway when they pulled over a passenger bus which was en-route to Cape Town. A search of the passenger bus ensued which led to the discovery of a carton with two bags. Upon further inspection of the bags the members discovered 7000 mandrax tablets and 2083 ecstasy tablets with an estimated value of R660 000-00.The discovery was linked to a passenger on board the bus who was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs. In an unrelated incident, earlier this week, 19 March 2024, Groot Brakrivier members stopped a red Mercedes Benz at Long Street, Groot Brakrivier. While approaching the vehicle an occupant exited it and fled on foot. The vigilant police members gave chase and cornered the suspect. A search of the suspect led to the confiscation of 785 Mandrax tablets which were found in his possession. The 50-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
Western Cape police management commended the members for their vigilance which ensured that drugs were removed from the streets.
