Nepal flash-flood death toll rises to 1,344
Nepal’s death toll from devastating flash floods has risen to 1,344, police said today, Saturday, 10 days after an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a torrent of water and debris.
Nepal Police said 843 complete bodies had been recovered, including 758 adults and 85 children, while 501 fragmented remains were also recovered. A further 4,898 people remain missing.
The disaster struck on 26 August, sending huge amounts of ice, rock, mud and water into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems and causing widespread destruction in northern and central Nepal.
Rescue teams are continuing to search damaged communities and hydropower facilities. Two workers were rescued alive from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station on Friday after being trapped for nine days.
China has also reported deaths and hundreds of people missing in Tibet, where the floods affected areas along the border. Search and rescue operations remain underway as authorities work to identify recovered remains and locate those still missing.
