N1 North partially closed after fatal crash near Codrington in Waterberg | Traffic update

N1 North crash

A life was lost on the N1 North in Limpopo on Sunday evening after a Hyundai H1 overturned between Codrington and Settlers, leaving one person dead, two others injured and traffic severely disrupted as emergency teams responded to the scene.

Motorists travelling through the Waterberg District have been urged to prepare for delays after authorities partially closed the highway while emergency personnel and law enforcement continued their response.

According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the vehicle is believed to have overturned after suffering a suspected tyre burst.

The driver sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was declared dead at the scene.

Two passengers escaped with minor injuries and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

The N1 North remains partially closed, with only one lane open to traffic. The fast lane has been closed to allow emergency services and investigators to safely manage the scene and clear the wreckage.

Traffic officials and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are directing motorists through the affected section of the highway.

Authorities have appealed to road users approaching the area to reduce speed, remain patient and obey all instructions issued by traffic officers while recovery operations continue.

Provincial Department of Transport spokesperson Mashudu Mabata extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased. To the injured, we wish you a speedy and full recovery,” Mabata said.

The department said it will issue a further update once the scene has been cleared and the N1 North has been fully reopened to normal traffic flow.

The latest fatal crash serves as another stark reminder of the devastating consequences of road accidents on South Africa’s highways, with authorities continuing to urge motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to remain vigilant behind the wheel.
