Mystery Deepens After Body of Missing Man Found at Bottom of Inchanga Cliff Following Alleged Break-In at Politician's Home

A discovery has thrown a cloud of mystery over KwaZulu-Natal after police search-and-rescue teams recovered the body of a missing man from the bottom of a steep cliff.

The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Kwanele Ngcobo, a young man who had been reported missing by his family nearly a month ago.

According to emerging reports, the circumstances surrounding Ngcobo’s disappearance are tied to a chain of events involving a prominent local politician.

Police are currently investigating whether a reported break-in at the Copesville property of uMgungundlovu District Municipality Speaker Nonhlanhla Gabela is linked to the case. While there is no suggestion that Gabela herself is implicated in the crime, the narrative provided to authorities has raised severe questions.

The initial account suggested that after a break-in occurred at the residence, an alleged intruder returned the following day to commit another theft but was intercepted and caught. The individual was then reportedly transported to the Inchanga area. Authorities were told that upon arriving at the location, the individual left the vehicle and went over the edge of a massive 110-metre cliff.

On Tuesday afternoon, specialized police K9 units and search-and-rescue teams deployed drones to navigate the difficult, rocky terrain in eTshangwe, Inchanga. At the foot of the precipice, they discovered the remains of Ngcobo.

Law enforcement officials are treating the initial account of the fall with skepticism.

A suspect has since been arrested and taken into custody for questioning as police officially open a murder investigation.

Detectives noted that the entire housebreaking and subsequent narrative originated entirely from the suspects, and its veracity has yet to be verified.

For Ngcobo’s mother, Sindisiwe Ngcobo, the discovery brings a painful end to weeks of uncertainty.

She had opened a missing person case at the Mountain Rise police station on 21 September after searching for her son at local hospitals and police stations.

While the recovery of his remains has given the family an initial sense of closure, they—alongside the Pietermaritzburg community—are now demanding answers to find out exactly what happened to Kwanele before his life ended.

The suspect remains in custody as forensic analysis and further police interrogations continue.
