As one of South Africa’s most recognisable reality television families prepares to return to screens, Mpilo Mseleku says viewers are about to witness a side of her they have never seen before.
The daughter of polygamist and reality television star Musa Mseleku has revealed that the upcoming fourth season of Zingane Zesthembu will expose her deepest struggles, personal growth and emotional battles, marking what she describes as the first time she has allowed the public to see the “real Mpilo”.
The popular Mzansi Magic reality series returns on 20 August, bringing audiences back into the lives of the Mseleku children as they navigate adulthood, family expectations and the realities of growing up in one of South Africa’s most talked about households.
Unlike previous seasons, Mpilo says she is no longer holding back.
“I realised it is now time for people to know the real Mpilo. People often think they know you when they actually only know a small fraction of your life,” she said.
Her comments suggest that the new season will move beyond the family’s familiar television storylines and offer viewers a more personal look at the emotional challenges she has faced away from the cameras.
A deeply personal chapter
Mpilo admitted that she spent years keeping her emotions to herself while trying to adjust to life as an independent young woman and understand her place within a large, high profile family.
That changes this season.
“This season, people will get to see me fully opening up. They will see me in moments of pain and witness how I overcome the hardships I face,” she said.
She acknowledged that bottling up her emotions made life more difficult and believes the time has finally come to be honest about the struggles that shaped her.
The result, she says, is a more confident and independent version of herself who is prepared to face challenges without hiding behind the cameras.

Zingane Zesthembu follows the lives of the children of Musa Mseleku, whose family has become a household name through reality shows including Uthando Nesthembu and Umnakwethu.
The fourth season will feature more members of the Mseleku family than before, offering audiences a broader look at life inside the famous polygamous household.
Returning cast members include Mpumelelo “Sbindi”, Sne, Lwandle, Abongwe, Mpilo, Mnini, Owami, Mawande and Thando. They will be joined by Khwezi Mazibuko, Tirelo Kale and Amahle Biyela.
The series continues to explore how the siblings navigate relationships, independence, identity and the pressures that come with growing up in the public eye.

For Mpilo, life inside a large polygamous family has been both demanding and transformative.
She believes growing up in such an environment forces children to become independent from an early age.
“In a big family, it is very easy to get buried and for your voice to end up lost. Therefore, it is crucial that you quickly learn to be confident and stand on your own without being shy,” she explained.
Her reflections offer a glimpse into the realities of life behind one of South Africa’s most famous families, where balancing individuality with family dynamics is an ongoing challenge.

While millions of viewers have followed the Mseleku family’s journey over the years, Mpilo believes audiences often overlook the experiences that never make it onto television.
She says public judgement can be difficult because viewers do not always have the full picture.
“What people need to understand is that a lot happens behind the scenes that does not end up on television. So, when they form opinions, they should understand the context of where those events are coming from,” she said.
Her comments serve as a reminder that reality television captures only selected moments, while much of the family’s personal experiences remain unseen.
Turning pain into purpose
Despite the scrutiny that comes with living in the spotlight, Mpilo says sharing her journey has given her an unexpected sense of purpose.
She finds encouragement in hearing from viewers who relate to her experiences and draw strength from watching her overcome personal obstacles.
“It brings me joy to meet people who tell me that my situation managed to inspire them to keep moving forward with life,” she said.
