Police Sergeant Killed While Responding to Domestic Violence Call in Bushbuckridge as Hunt for Suspect Intensifies
A routine response to a domestic violence complaint ended in tragedy on Saturday night when a police sergeant was allegedly killed and a fellow officer seriously injured during a violent attack in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.
South African Police Service (SAPS) investigators have launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect, who remains on the run after allegedly turning on the officers moments after appearing to cooperate with them.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the province and prompted senior police leadership to vow that those responsible will face justice.
According to police, the two officers responded to a domestic violence complaint after a man arrived at Bushbuckridge Police Station seeking help. He reported that his brother had been causing trouble at their shared home, prompting officers to accompany him to the property.
When police arrived, the suspect allegedly came outside and spoke calmly with the officers. For a brief moment, the situation appeared to be under control.
That calm quickly descended into chaos.
Police say the suspect suddenly returned inside the house before emerging armed with a sharp object. He allegedly attacked both officers without warning, fatally wounding the 41-year-old police sergeant before assaulting the 37-year-old police constable and pushing him into a nearby hole.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot before additional officers could arrive.
Emergency services rushed both officers to a nearby medical facility. Tragically, the police sergeant was declared dead on arrival, while the injured constable was admitted to hospital, where he continues to receive medical treatment.
Authorities have opened cases of murder and attempted murder as investigations continue.
The case has now been escalated to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, reflecting the seriousness of the attack on law enforcement officers.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, said police would leave no stone unturned in tracking down the suspect.
“We will not allow anyone to attack our members without consequences, and we will make sure that we do everything possible to find him,” he said.
He described the killing of a police officer as a direct attack on the State and confirmed that the investigation had been prioritised.
Mkhwanazi also urged police officers across the province to remain vigilant while serving their communities and to use the resources available to them when faced with dangerous situations requiring self defence and the protection of the public.
He extended his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer and wished the injured constable a full and speedy recovery.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist investigators in locating the suspect to come forward immediately. The manhunt remains active as authorities continue efforts to bring the suspect before the courts.
