Motorists Brace As Petrol Breaks R30
South African motorists face another steep fuel price increase from on midnight, Wednesday, 7 October, with inland 95-octane petrol breaking the R30-a-litre mark for the first time.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources confirmed that 95 petrol will increase by R3.33 a litre to R30.25 inland, while 93 petrol rises by R3.12 to R29.88. At the coast, 95 petrol will cost R29.38 a litre.
Wholesale diesel prices will also surge, with 0.05% sulphur diesel increasing by R2.84 to R31.95 a litre inland and R31.08 at the coast. The price of 0.005% sulphur diesel rises by R3.24 to R33.29 inland.
Illuminating paraffin increases by R3.58 a litre at wholesale level.
The latest increases have been driven largely by higher international petroleum prices, linked to tensions between the US and Iran. A slightly stronger rand was not enough to offset the rise in global product prices.
Some filling stations reported long queues on Tuesday night as motorists rushed to fill up before the new prices took effect.
