Mokwana reveals why he could not join Chiefs earlier
Elias Mokwana has fulfilled a lifelong ambition. The South African international signed for Kaizer Chiefs this week, and he has revealed he was supposed to be at Naturena two years ago.
Speaking to kaizerchiefs.com shortly after putting pen to paper, the 27-year-old winger introduced himself to the Amakhosi faithful, and the emotion was clear.
“I grew up supporting Amakhosi,” Mokwana said. “I first heard that they were interested in me when I was at Sekhukhune.
“Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time.”
When the news finally came, Mokwana was with his sisters. His first move was to phone his mother.
“I was sitting with my sisters, and the first thing I did was phone my mother to share the good news with her,” he revealed.
“I can’t explain the feeling exactly. I’m excited. It’s a very nice feeling. This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here.”
On what the Gold and Black means to him, he did not hold back.
“For me, it is a dream come true. I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the club.”
Mokwana was born in Pretoria, where his mother worked. At three he moved to live with his grandmother in Limpopo, and at five he moved to Mpumalanga, where he started school and began playing football.
After junior football with various teams, Polokwane City Rovers scouted him, and he won the ABC Motsepe League North West stream with them. He then joined Sekhukhune United, and after two seasons left for Esperance in Tunisia.
Now, the boy who grew up supporting Amakhosi finally gets to wear the shirt.
