Residents of eThekwini have expressed mixed views on the African National Congress (ANC) as the party turns 113 today.
Some say the party has done great work since coming to power in 1994, while others claim the party has lost its values over the years, hence its dismal results in the 2024 general elections.
These residents have called on the party to desist from nepotism and focus on the creation of more jobs while attending to issues of service delivery.
“I’m not into politics but what I can say is that there’s a lot the ANC has done for this country, they’ve done some work since the Mandela-era.”
“We’re happy that they are celebrating 113 years but we have complaints as members of the ANC. They were doing well before our children were employed even us, we were working but now things are different.”
“It’s a good thing they’ve been in existence for so long even though there are so many dissatisfactions now, there are so many things lacking in their service delivery.”
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa was in Cape Town to celebrate the party’s birthday.
Meanwhile, residents of Mpumalanga have shared a variety of opinions regarding the party’s performance in governing the country.
Some expressed gratitude to the party in achieving freedom for the country, while others are urging the ANC to improve service delivery in order to regain the people’s trust.
“When I hear the name ANC it’s like I hear the name of my mother because I love my mother. No matter there are those who are here for money, the corrupt ones. Well, it is up to the ANC on how it is going to deal with them but for me, I like the ANC because I am here where I am because of the ANC.”
“I think for them to regain their support; they must improve employment opportunities and the needs of the youth. The youth are unemployed and just sitting at home. There are a lot of people struggling in communities and we are always voting, voting for nothing. Only those who are related to people in high places are getting employment and us who voted are just sitting at home.”
