NELSPRUIT – The Acornhoek Police arrested a 38-year-old male suspect on Saturday, 23 November 2024, for the possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. The arrest was made as part of the ongoing Operation Safer Festive Season operation. Members from Visible Policing Support and their counterparts from Detective Services received information about a person in possession of an unlicensed firearm and immediately acted on the tip-off. Upon arrival at a premises in Cruigburn Trust near Acornhoek, the suspect attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended by the astute members. A search of the premises led to the discovery of the unlicensed firearm with ammunition, though the serial number on the weapon was filed off. The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine its history and whether it has been previously used in the commission of any crimes. Additional charges may be added to the suspect’s charges pending the outcome of the investigation. The arrested suspect is due to appear at the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 November 2024. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the swift action taken by the Police in arresting the suspect and confiscating the firearm with ammunition.
