Limpopo NPA spokesperson accused of media discrimination over court coverage

LIMPOPO – Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi has been accused of discriminating against local media houses through what they describe as selective access to court proceedings and live-streaming coverage.

The allegations follow a sudden demand for Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) certificates from MDNTV and other local media houses, while SABC, Daily Sun and Jacaranda FM were allegedly excluded from the requirement.

On Thursday, 8 October 2026, affected media houses were reportedly given an ultimatum to produce the certificates or risk being prohibited from live-streaming court proceedings. The demand allegedly followed claims by Malabi that some MDNTV followers had directed abusive comments at Polokwane Magistrate Geoffrey Netshiozwi during proceedings involving suspended attorney Charlotte Tibana and her husband, TMPD Constable Peter Nonyane ” Gagash”

The media houses have also raised concerns about the alleged selective distribution of information about court appearances, claiming that certain outlets receive updates individually, sometimes late at night, while others are left out of the media WhatsApp group.

They argue that the practice disadvantages journalists, particularly those based outside Polokwane, by giving them limited time to arrange transport and attend court proceedings.

On Friday, 9 October 2026, MDNTV, Mokgalakwena Local Newspaper and Mokgalakwena TV were reportedly instructed not to broadcast or take pictures during court proceedings in the fraud and corruption case involving the Mogalakwena Local Municipality manager, who was arrested by the Hawks.

The allegations have raised concerns about equal treatment of media houses, transparency and access to court proceedings in the province.

MDNTV will update as soon the NPA national Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago and SANEF Chairperson respond towards the matter.
