VHEMBE | A chapter that remained unfinished for more than three decades has finally come to an end in Limpopo, as the historic Mphaphuli royal house officially welcomed its new traditional leader in a ceremony marking the restoration of one of the province’s most respected chieftaincies.

Chief Tshivhelo Tshikonelo Mphaphuli was formally installed on Saturday by Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba during a significant traditional ceremony held in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality. The installation brought to a close a leadership vacuum that had lasted since 1993, ending years of anticipation for communities under the Mphaphuli Traditional Council.

The ceremony drew prominent political and traditional leaders from across the province and beyond, reflecting the importance of the occasion. Among those in attendance were Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavhani, members of the Limpopo Executive Council, municipal mayors and representatives from various houses of traditional leaders.

For many residents, the installation represented far more than a ceremonial event. It marked the revival of a royal institution that has played a central role in the cultural, social and traditional identity of the Venda people for generations.

The Mphaphuli chieftaincy is recognised as one of the oldest and most influential traditional royal houses in Limpopo. Its authority extends across several communities, including Mukondeni, Mauluma, Thondoni, Tshidembe, Vhurivhuri, Kutame and Tshiawelo, among others.

The traditional council had remained without a formally recognised chief following the death of Chief Tshovhele Nngwendzeni Alfred Mphaphuli (Madadzhe III) in 1993. The prolonged succession process left one of Venda’s most respected royal houses without an officially installed leader for 33 years.

Saturday’s installation therefore carried profound symbolic and cultural significance, signalling the restoration of leadership and continuity for communities that have long awaited the recognition of a new chief.

The history of the Mphaphuli royal house stretches back centuries. According to Venda oral tradition, the dynasty traces its roots to Gole, a high priest who served during the reign of the legendary King Thohoyandou.

Historical accounts say Gole earned the praise name “Mphaphuli” because of his exceptional military skill and bravery. Over time, that title became the name of one of Venda’s most distinguished royal houses, preserving a legacy that continues to shape the region’s traditional leadership.

The installation of Chief Tshivhelo Tshikonelo Mphaphuli marks not only the beginning of a new era for the royal family but also the continuation of a centuries old institution that remains deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Limpopo. For the communities under his leadership, the ceremony represents renewed stability, restored heritage and the promise of continuity after more than three decades of uncertainty.
