A South African High Court has handed down a life sentence to Mzwanele Anele Ningi (36) after a brutal chain of events rooted in a history of domestic abuse ended in tragedy.
The ruling, delivered in Bhisho, follows Ningi’s conviction for the murder of his former partner, Nozibele Tshangela (41), and the attempted murder of her partner, Luphelo Mkhosana (42). The attack took place on 12 September 2021 in Keiskammahoek.
Court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern. Tshangela had endured repeated abuse during her relationship with Ningi, including multiple assaults earlier in 2021. She had taken legal steps by filing a case and obtaining a protection order, but despite these efforts, the threats and violence did not stop. At one point, Ningi even warned that he would harm any man she moved on with.
On the night of the incident, those threats became reality. Ningi forced his way into Tshangela’s home, where she was with Mkhosana. He launched a violent attack, stabbing Mkhosana several times. Despite his injuries, Mkhosana managed to escape and seek help from neighbours. He was later hospitalised for more than two months.
Ningi then chased Tshangela outside and stabbed her repeatedly. She was found outside her home and declared dead at the scene. Medical examination later confirmed she died from multiple stab wounds.
After fleeing, Ningi was arrested the following day. Investigators found bloodstained clothing in his possession, and forensic tests linked him directly to the crime. Mkhosana also identified him as the attacker.
During sentencing, prosecutors highlighted Ningi’s repeated disregard for the law, including violating a protection order, and the extreme level of violence involved. The court also considered the lasting impact on Tshangela’s family, especially her two young children.
Although the court issued additional sentences — including two years for violating the protection order, eight years for housebreaking with intent to commit murder, and fifteen years for attempted murder — all will run concurrently with the life sentence.
Oufficials say the judgment sends a strong message about how seriously the justice system treats ghttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UClWk6DQBYHf6rLP8VtMn0Xwender-based violence and the violation of court protection orders. They also acknowledged the role of support staff who helped the surviving victim through the legal process.
The case stands as a stark reminder of how patterns of abuse, when ignored or unresolved, can escalate into irreversible loss.
