Lebohang Zulu, Chairperson of the BRICS Women in Business Alliance, is a trailblazer for African women
in global trade. Driven by a transformative vision, Zulu aims to shift the narrative for African women,
turning them from victims of global systems into powerful leaders and innovators in the global
economy.
Zulu’s commitment to women’s empowerment is deeply personal. A pivotal moment in 2022, when she
sat by her grandmother’s gravesite, solidified her mission to create lasting change for African women.
This experience fuelled her determination to use her leadership to help African women become key
players in global trade.
Her leadership was tested during a financial crisis in Moscow, where she realized how limited African
autonomy is in global systems. This moment reinforced her drive to create economic models that
empower women to shape the future of global trade on their own terms.
Under her leadership, the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance has opened doors for women entrepreneurs
across the BRICS nations. Through initiatives like the BRICS Women Startup Contest, women are now
accessing international markets, investment opportunities, and strategic partnerships. Zulu encourages
South African women to step forward with their bold visions and innovative ideas, as the shifting global
power dynamics create new opportunities.
Zulu also addresses the challenges women face in accessing markets and funding. She stresses the
importance of understanding global demand, building strong digital presences, and refining business
plans to position themselves for success. Her key advice to women entrepreneurs is to shift from a
mindset of limitation to one of legitimacy, confidently presenting business ideas to investors.
“If God entrusted you with an idea, it means He has already equipped you with what it takes to build it.
You don’t need to have all the answers right now. Start where you are, with what you have—and keep
showing up. Doors will open. People will come. Resources will align.” Lebohang Zulu
Mentorship and supportive networks play a crucial role in Zulu’s leadership philosophy. She believes in
collaboration over competition and advocates for creating ecosystems where women empower one
another. Zulu’s work has influenced real change, demonstrated at the BRICS Power Pitch, where women
entrepreneurs secured investment commitments.
Looking ahead, Zulu aims to catalyse new trade corridors, create funding opportunities, and influence
policy shifts that benefit women entrepreneurs. She urges South African women to take leadership roles
within BRICS, engage in global trade, and shape its future. Zulu’s leadership is about more than business, it’s about creating a legacy of empowerment and transformation for future generations of women in business.
