KZN Police Officer Removed from Election Duty for Driving Political Branded Vehicle

A South African Police Service (SAPS) Sergeant has been precautionarily removed from her election deployment in KwaZulu-Natal following allegations of serious unprofessional conduct during today’s Local Government Elections on 4 November 2026.

The police officer, who was stationed at a voting facility in the Mphithini area of Donnybrook, reportedly arrived at the voting station driving a vehicle clearly branded with posters of a specific political party.

Police management confirmed that voting at the affected station has not been disrupted and is continuing seamlessly.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Phumelele Makoba, issued a stern warning that unprofessional or politically biased conduct by law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.

“We reminded our officers of their responsibilities and how they must conduct themselves,” said Major General Makoba. “Apart from internal disciplinary steps, we shall investigate contravention of any applicable Act so that we investigate the matter holistically and open criminal proceedings if investigations direct us to do so.”

In a separate incident early on Wednesday morning, a suspect was arrested at a voting station in M Section, Umlazi.

According to police reports, the individual arrived at the venue drinking alcohol and visibly intoxicated. When police officers attempted to intervene and manage his disruptive behavior, the suspect assaulted them.

He was immediately taken into custody on charges of assault, with additional charges related to the contravention of the Electoral Act currently being considered.

Meanwhile, in the Ibisi policing precinct, three K9 Unit police officers sustained minor injuries in the line of duty.

The officers were en route to their designated voting station when their vehicle collided with two cattle on the road.

All three officers were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated, discharged, and officially declared fit to return to their election security duties.
