Durban City goalkeeper Darren Keet has lifted the lid on the real reason behind his decision to retire at the end of the 2025/26 season, and it all started at home.
The veteran shot-stopper confirmed he will hang up his gloves after helping Durban City secure their historic Nedbank Cup triumph, beating TS Galaxy 2-1 in the final at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Keet admitted the decision was not just about football, but family.
“I’m not hinting at anything, I’m calling it quits at the end of this season,” said Keet. “This Nedbank Cup was my first, and it will be my last.”
The 35-year-old revealed that his wife played a decisive role, growing tired of living separately while he was based in Durban.
“My wife told me she’s not doing another year like this,” he explained. “She’s in Cape Town with the kids while I’m here on my own. That’s when I knew it was time.”
Keet said the couple agreed late last year that the timing was right to prioritise family life and return to Cape Town permanently.
“I started preparing for life after football, looking into coaching, and everything is in place,” he added.
The emotional cup final victory turned into a perfect farewell moment, with Keet celebrating alongside his wife, children, and parents in Polokwane.
“It’s very special. My family has been there throughout my career. Seeing my dad get emotional meant a lot.
“It’s happy tears. Just an incredible way to end this chapter,” said Keet.
