Grudges and Goalless Football: Chiefs and Arrows Play It Cagey in Nelspruit
Well, this is awkward. Kaizer Chiefs travelled to Mpumalanga looking for revenge, a giant venue borrowed a giraffe-shaped roof from a World Cup, and after 90 minutes, the only thing anyone’s scored is a nil-nil bore draw.
Golden Arrows and Kaizer Chiefs finished level at Mbombela Stadium, in a fixture that’s already had more subplot than actual football.
For starters, this was never supposed to be in Nelspruit at all — Arrows were forced out of their own KwaZulu-Natal backyard by a venue crisis.
They dragged Chiefs three provinces away from home for what’s technically an “away” game that isn’t really away for either of them.
Then there’s the small matter of unfinished business. Arrows are the only side to have beaten Chiefs all season, dumping Amakhosi out of the MTN8 quarterfinal with a smash-and-grab 1-0 back in August.
And Chiefs arrived at Mbombela very much looking to even the score. Instead, the first half delivered exactly the kind of nervy, error-strewn stalemate you’d expect from two teams who know each other far too well.
Chiefs came in as the division’s most prolific attack, averaging two goals a game — but also as owners of a leaky defence that had shipped seven goals in six matches.
With captain Brandon Petersen sidelined for weeks his deputy Renaldo Leaner handed his first league start between the sticks.
Faiz Abrahams, deputising for the also-injured top scorer Wandile Duba, was tasked with providing the firepower. Whatever fireworks were promised, though, stayed firmly in the box for 90 minutes.
Arrows, for their part, played exactly the way their season suggests they would: tight, disciplined, and allergic to conceding — they’ve kept four clean sheets in six matches — but equally allergic to scoring, with just three goals to their name all campaign.
Junior Dion, their most reliable outlet, was kept quiet all game, as Chiefs’ much-changed backline somehow held its nerve.
The results means none of the team move from the position they were in before the start of the game, Amakhosi in fourth with 13 points, and Arrows in eighth with eight.
