Justice Delayed but Not Denied: Bail Refused for Trio Accused of Assassinating Former Groblersdal Police Chief

Six years after the brutal assassination of former Groblersdal Police Station Commander, Colonel Lebyane Jeffrey Seroka, the wheels of justice are finally turning as the State successfully opposed bail for three individuals implicated in his murder.

The breakthrough follows a coordinated operation by specialized units within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), including the Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) and National Priority Violent Crimes (NPVC) teams.

The accused—Dimakatso Seroka (51), Johannes Makgoga (56), and Virginia Mokgoga (41)—were apprehended in the Sekhukhune District on 9 October 2026.

Following their arrest, a court ruled that they must remain in custody pending trial, a decision strongly welcomed by law enforcement officials.

Colonel Seroka was ambushed and fatally shot on 17 October 2020 outside his home in Maganagobuswa Village, under the Dennilton policing precinct, while preparing to attend a funeral. After the shooting, his attackers hijacked his vehicle, which was later found abandoned.

The three suspects face an array of heavy charges, including: murder and conspiracy to commit murder, vehicle hijacking, robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition
Limpopo’s Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General (Adv.) Gopz Govender, praised his team’s long-term dedication to the case.

“A police officer who loses their life in the service of the country must never become a forgotten statistic,” Govender stated.

“Six years may have passed, but our responsibility to pursue justice remains unchanged.”

The case has been postponed to 18 January 2027 to allow for further investigation, while the Hawks actively pursue outstanding leads to track down a fourth suspect believed to be connected to the assassination.
