“HE COULD WIPE OUT MY ENTIRE FAMILY”: Explosive Threat Allegations Against General Sibiya Surface in Court
Serious allegations of threats against an entire family emerged during court proceedings involving General Shadrack Sibiya on Tuesday, as a sworn statement detailing alleged intimidation became the subject of questioning.
The affidavit, dated 18 September 2016, contained allegations that Sibiya had previously threatened a family member following a confrontation concerning allegations involving the deponent’s daughter.
According to the statement read during the proceedings, the alleged threats were not an isolated incident.
“This was not the first time that General Sibiya had threatened me,” the deponent stated.
The affidavit alleged that, when confronted about the daughter’s allegations, Sibiya became angry and referred to his knowledge of the family.
The deponent further alleged that Sibiya had said he could harm or wipe out the entire family.
The statement described the lasting fear allegedly caused by those remarks.
The deponent said the alleged threats remained firmly in his mind and contributed to his continuing fear for his safety and that of his relatives.
He also indicated that he had decided to make a sworn statement and wanted the police to investigate.
The allegations attracted scrutiny during the hearing when questions were raised about the circumstances of the earlier confrontation.
In particular, the questioning focused on when the alleged confrontation took place, what prompted it and how it related to the allegations involving the deponent’s daughter.
These questions are significant because the court must distinguish between what an affidavit alleges and what can be established through the evidence.
The allegations contained in the sworn statement have not been presented here as judicial findings against Sibiya.
Their appearance in the proceedings nevertheless introduces a serious issue concerning alleged intimidation and the circumstances in which the statement was made.
The court’s examination of the affidavit also underscores the importance of testing the chronology and context of statements relied upon by parties in contested proceedings.
The allegations remain subject to the court process, and Sibiya is entitled to challenge the evidence presented against him.
