Hammarsdale Missing Man Found Buried in Shallow Grave as Two Siblings Arrested for Murder
A quiet village in Hammarsdale has been left reeling after police uncovered the body of a 20 year old man buried in a shallow grave, ending weeks of uncertainty and replacing hope with heartbreak.
The grim discovery was made on Wednesday in Mlaba Village, KwaZulu Natal, where investigators exhumed the remains of Zothani Zungu, who had been missing since 21 May. Two siblings, aged 19 and 20, have since been arrested and are facing murder charges.
For Zothani’s family, the devastating discovery has raised one haunting question. How could the people he trusted most allegedly be responsible for his death?
A Routine Trip That Became a Mystery
According to Zothani’s sister, Zandile Zungu, her brother shared a close friendship with the two suspects. Their bond was so strong that the family never imagined they could pose any danger to him.
She said one of the suspects arrived at their home on 21 May and asked Zothani to accompany him to a nearby shop.
“They left together, and when Zothani did not return that night, we assumed he had slept over at their home because they were so close,” she recalled.
The following day, the same suspect allegedly returned and urged another member of the Zungu family to accompany him to the police station to report Zothani missing.
According to Zandile, the suspect claimed that while they were at Mini Town, they had been chased by unknown people and fled in different directions.
Looking back, she believes there were warning signs that the family did not recognise at the time.
“He never asked whether Zothani had returned home. Instead, he immediately wanted to report him missing. We did not think anything of it because they were close friends.”
Family Began to Suspect Something Was Wrong
Rather than immediately going to the police, the family first visited the suspect’s home in search of answers.
Zandile said the suspects’ mother reacted angrily, insisting her children knew nothing about Zothani’s disappearance.
The family agreed to report the matter to police the following morning, but when the time came, the suspect had disappeared.
“He was nowhere to be found. His mother later claimed that unknown people had arrived in a vehicle, assaulted him, knocked out his teeth and dragged him away with the car,” she said.
The family’s suspicions grew stronger as the explanations continued to change.
Eventually, they opened a missing persons case themselves and waited anxiously for news.
Weeks of Silence End in a Grim Discovery
For weeks, there was little progress in the investigation.
That changed on Tuesday when police reportedly received information suggesting that Zothani had been buried in a nearby forest.
Investigators searched the area but were unable to locate the grave after the suspects allegedly pointed officers to several incorrect locations.
According to the family, the suspects claimed they could no longer remember exactly where the body had been buried.
Police returned to the area on Wednesday with sniffer dogs, leading to the discovery of a shallow grave where Zothani’s body was recovered.
“Even now, we still cannot believe what we witnessed,” said Zandile.
“We saw his body being removed from the ground, yet it is still difficult to accept that people he trusted could have done this.”
Family Demands Answers
The Zungu family says they are now focused on finding out what led to the alleged killing.
Zandile described her brother and the suspects as inseparable friends whose relationship appeared genuine.
She said the family is waiting for the court process and the post mortem report to reveal how Zothani died and why he was allegedly targeted.
“We want them to explain why this happened and why any disagreement could not have been resolved peacefully,” she said.
Police Confirm Murder Arrests
KwaZulu Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that officers from Mpumalanga Police arrested two suspects, aged 19 and 20, in connection with the murder.
“The investigation led police to a shallow grave in Mlaba Village, where the body of the missing person was found,” Magwaza confirmed.
The investigation is continuing as police prepare the case for court.
The discovery has sent shockwaves through the Hammarsdale community, where residents are struggling to come to terms with allegations that a friendship which appeared unbreakable ended in a suspected murder.
