Gauteng Police Sergeant and Associate Shot Dead in Limpopo Illegal Mining Dispute
An illegal mining dispute in Limpopo turned deadly on Tuesday when an off duty Gauteng police sergeant and another man were shot dead during a violent confrontation at an unlicensed mining operation in Ga Mahlokwane village, near Burgersfort in the Sekhukhune District.
Sergeant Patrick Mvula Nzapheza, 40, who was attached to the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit and based in Orange Farm, was killed alongside Evans Sadike after an escalating dispute over control of the illegal mining site.
According to police, the two men had allegedly claimed a 60% stake in the operation and arrived at the site carrying what they described as a court order instructing the operator to stop activities.
The pair first visited the mining area on Friday, 17 July, where they demanded that security personnel contact the owner of the operation. When the owner did not arrive, they returned on Tuesday, 21 July, and again instructed guards to remain at the site while they waited.
The situation quickly deteriorated when several vehicles carrying local community members arrived at the scene.
A confrontation followed, leading to a physical altercation during which one man was shot dead. Another man was injured and managed to flee the scene but later died after arriving at Mecklenburg Hospital.
Police in Driekop have opened two murder cases and launched a manhunt for those responsible for the killings.
Limpopo Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers expressed shock over the incident, saying the police service was deeply saddened by the loss of one of its members.
“All available resources are being mobilised to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Scheepers said.
The deaths highlight the growing violence surrounding illegal mining operations in parts of Limpopo, where disputes over control, territory and access to valuable resources have increasingly fuelled deadly conflicts.
Authorities have stressed that the dispute involved an unlawful mining operation rather than a licensed mine, as investigations continue into the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Illegal mining has remained a major challenge for law enforcement agencies across South Africa, with criminal networks and competing groups often fighting for control of abandoned or unregulated mining sites.
Police investigations into the Ga Mahlokwane killings are ongoing, while officers continue searching for the suspects linked to the attack.
