Four Women Held At Gunpoint For An Hour During Home Robbery In Amaoti, KZN

Four women were held hostage at gunpoint for approximately an hour by three armed suspects during a home robbery in the Zambia area of Amaoti, north of Durban, shortly after midnight on Monday, 2 November 2026.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call about the incident at 00:02. According to the complainant, she and three other women were inside the house when the suspects arrived and demanded entry. When the occupants refused to open the door, the men allegedly attempted to force their way inside. One of the suspects was reportedly armed with a firearm.

One of the occupants told responders that the suspects fired two shots before gaining entry. Once inside, they allegedly claimed to be employees of a vehicle tracking company and demanded the keys to a white Volkswagen Polo parked in the yard.

The women explained that the vehicle had allegedly been stolen in December and that its owner wanted it returned. The woman who had possession of the car said she did not have the keys because her boyfriend had taken them to a farm.

The suspects then ordered the women to search for a spare key while keeping them hostage for about an hour. After failing to find the keys, they allegedly attempted to steal the Polo by smashing one of its windows with a brick but eventually abandoned the vehicle. One of the women was also allegedly assaulted.

The suspects fled with two smartphones and a pair of takkies.

RUSA members who attended the scene found no spent cartridges or visible damage inside the house consistent with gunfire. As a result, it could not be established whether shots had been fired or whether the suspects had used a blank-firing firearm.

The women later went to Amaoti SAPS to open a criminal case. No arrests have been reported.
