Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The SAPS in Mpumalanga, under the leadership of the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, conducted a successful sting operation in Barberton resulting in the arrest of four suspects between the ages of 26 and 33. The operation, which commenced on Friday night, 14 March 2025, and continued into the early hours of Saturday, 15 March 2025, targeted individuals involved in various criminal activities within the community, including murder. This operation was conducted in response to concerns raised by members of the Barberton community during a recent engagement with the Deputy Minister of Police, Mr Cassel Mathale and senior SAPS officials, who vowed to address the community’s grievances promptly. Despite these collaborative efforts, a misleading video clip circulated on social media, highlighting the same issues discussed during the community engagement. The SAPS reiterates the importance of providing accurate information and refraining from spreading false narratives that undermine Community-Police partnerships. The arrests made during the sting operation pertain to serious offences such as murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, violation of a protection order, as well as housebreaking and theft. The apprehended suspects are scheduled to appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 March 2025, to face charges related to their alleged criminal activities. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the SAPS team for their swift and decisive action, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to combatting crime in Barberton. The General urged the community to cooperate with law enforcement by providing crucial information that could assist in addressing crime effectively. The General emphasized the importance of collective efforts in maintaining public safety and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the authorities. “More of similar activities must be expected as we tackle crime issues in Barberton. What we request is the space to execute our duties and we will do this without fear or favour,” said the General. Ends
