Former Chiefs star Sithebe lands at Fourth-Division Flamingo FC
The search for a new club is finally over for former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siyethemba Sithebe, who has found a new home in the fourth tier of South African football.
His disappearance from the public eye left fans wondering what had become of him, but on Thursday morning, Flamingo FC announced his signing. Sithebe will now turn out for the KZN SAFA King Cetshwayo Regional League Stream B side.
The Newcastle-born midfielder first showed his potential at Mbombela United, where he was a standout performer when the now-defunct club came close to qualifying for the Betway Premiership.
AmaZulu FC signed him next, and he continued his rise in the professional ranks until Kaizer Chiefs took notice. His move to Naturena was not without drama: he was suspended from training with the AmaZulu first team after it emerged that he had signed a pre-contract with Amakhosi.
Chiefs fans warmly welcomed the signing, partly because of his resemblance to club legend Siphiwe Tshabalala. Sithebe, however, spent two unsuccessful seasons at Naturena before being released and joining Richards Bay FC.
He left the Natal Rich Boyz under a cloud after a reported run-in with the coaches in an alleged drunken rage. After that, he vanished from the spotlight until this Thursday.
In a short statement, Flamingo FC welcomed their new signing: “Ongikhumbuza uTshabalala (The one who reminds me of Tshabalala) is Yellow and Blue. His experience will boost us a lot.”
