WELKOM – A 28-year-old accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a former girlfriend at his shack in Thabong during 2018. On the 1 September 2018 a female victim aged 19 years at that time was with her friend after attending a funeral. Her ex-boyfriend arrived and told her to go with him. Since she was scared of the accused she went with him. The accused took the victim to his friends, and they stayed for a while. He then took the victim to a local tavern in 2010 Village in Thabong before taking her to his shack in 2010 Village. Upon arrival at his shack the accused named Lereko Joseph Morake assaulted the victim with a chain and then raped her. The victim reported the matter to the police and a case of rape was opened for investigation. Accused was apprehended the following day, 2 September 2018. He made few appearances before Welkom Magistrates Court and was later granted bail. The accused failed to appear before Court on the scheduled Court date and a warrant of arrest was issued against him. The accused was traced and re arrested on 14 July 2023. The accused was sentenced before Welkom Magistrates’ Court on 17 September 2024 to three years direct imprisonment for assault with grievous bodily harm and life imprisonment for rape after he was positively linked through DNA. The case was investigated by Sergeant Pontsho Mokoena from Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
