Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa Linked With Turkish Club Erzurumspor Transfer Move
The futures of Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa and recently released forward Tshegofatso Mabasa could soon take an unexpected turn, with reports from Turkey linking both South Africans to an ambitious European move.
The striking pair have reportedly emerged as transfer targets for Turkish side Erzurumspor FK, which is actively searching for a powerful centre forward ahead of the new season. While no formal offers have been confirmed, both players are understood to feature on the club’s shortlist as it prepares to strengthen its attacking options.
Makgopa remains under contract with Orlando Pirates, meaning any move would require negotiations with the Soweto giants. Mabasa, meanwhile, is a free agent after leaving the Buccaneers at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, making him an attractive option for clubs seeking an experienced striker without a transfer fee.
Mabasa has also been linked with rivals Kaizer Chiefs in recent weeks, although those reports have yet to develop into a completed deal.
According to Turkish publication Tıbbıye Bülteni, Erzurumspor’s recruitment team is looking for a physically dominant striker with proven finishing ability and the versatility to lead the line as a lone forward.
The report states that the club’s coaching staff want an attacker who is strong in the air, adapts quickly during fast transitions and has the presence to spearhead the team’s attack. Erzurumspor are also reportedly hoping to structure any deal as an initial loan with an option to make the transfer permanent.
Makgopa and Mabasa are not the only names under consideration.
The Turkish outfit is also believed to be monitoring several Europe-based forwards, including Senegal international Bamba Dieng, United States striker Jordan Siebatcheu and Gambian forward Ali Sowe.
With multiple candidates under review, competition for a place on Erzurumspor’s shortlist appears fierce. Whether either South African eventually secures the move remains to be seen.
Should Makgopa or Mabasa complete a transfer to Erzurumspor, they would follow in the footsteps of former Bafana Bafana captain Siphiwe Tshabalala, who previously represented the Turkish club during his career.
For Makgopa, a move could offer the opportunity to test himself in European football while continuing his development. For Mabasa, it could provide a fresh start after his departure from Orlando Pirates and reignite the next chapter of his career.
As the transfer window gathers momentum, the futures of both forwards are likely to remain under close scrutiny, with Turkey emerging as a possible destination for two of South African football’s most closely watched attackers.
