Media Statement POLOKWANE – Lakiso Mencheme Tasfaye (39) was sentenced for possession of illicit cigarettes by the Giyani Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 09 May 2024. In February 2024, the Hoedspruit based Organised Crime Investigation members received a tip-off about the Ethiopian male suspect in possession of illicit cigarettes, travelling from Malamulele outside Giyani to Mpumalanga province. The suspect was intercepted in Hoedspruit policing area, driving in a silver grey Toyota Rav 4. Upon searching the vehicle, several boxes containing Remington Gold illicit cigarettes valued at R390 000, 00 were confiscated. After Tasfaye was arrested, he was granted bail and made several court appearances until he was convicted and handed a fine of Two Hundred Thousand Rands (R200 000, 00) or five years’ imprisonment. The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has appreciated the good work done by the team until the accused was convicted and sentenced. Ends
