Done Deal! Chiefs Land Bafana Winger Elias Mokwana After Two-Year Wait
Kaizer Chiefs have their man. Elias Mokwana is officially an Amakhosi player, two years after the club first tried to sign him.
The club confirmed the signing of the Bafana Bafana international, who returns to South African football after a spell abroad that took in North Africa and the Middle East.
Chiefs were interested in the 27-year-old in 2024, but he chose a move from Sekhukhune United to Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis. Reports at the time suggested the deal was worth around R7 million.
Things did not go as planned. Mokwana later had a loan spell at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem and became a free agent in September after leaving Espérance. A move to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club was reported to be close, but registration issues scuppered it, and the winger went back home to Mpumalanga to weigh his options. That was when Chiefs came knocking again.
Fernando Da Cruz has been looking to boost his attack after a run of draws, and Mokwana’s pace, direct running and international experience could give Chiefs a new dimension. Because he was a free agent, Chiefs did not have to pay a transfer fee.
Mokwana hails from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga and arrives with a lot of experience for a 27-year-old.
“Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs Family,” the club said in a statement announcing hus arrival.
