Broos tips Mbokazi for great perfomance after impressive World Cup campaign
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes Mbekezeli Mbokazi is ready to take the next step in his career by moving to one of the world’s top leagues following his outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran Belgian coach praised the 20-year-old defender for his remarkable development but insisted that he now needs to test himself in a more competitive environment to continue improving.
Mbokazi was one of South Africa’s standout performers as Bafana Bafana reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history before suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
The KwaZulu-Natal-born defender joined Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire from Orlando Pirates in January and has continued to grow into one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.
Speaking before Bafana’s clash against Canada, Broos said Mbokazi has all the qualities to become one of the national team’s future leaders.
“He is not only a good player, but he can be a leader for Bafana Bafana in the future,” said Broos.
“I expect a lot from him and I see him having a fantastic career. He has improved immensely. When I compare the player I saw a year ago with the one I see today, he is much better.”
Broos believes Mbokazi’s next challenge should be a move to a stronger league.
“I really hope that in the next months or years he moves to an even bigger competition where he will be challenged more.”
The Belgian tactician also praised the defender’s physical and technical qualities.
“Everybody has seen it when he played for us. He is strong, quick and excellent on the ball. He is a top-class defender.”
Broos also highlighted Mbokazi’s partnership with Germany-based defender Ime Okon, saying the pair give South Africa a solid foundation for the future.
“With Ime next to him, you have two exceptional young centre-backs. I think the future of Bafana Bafana’s defence is secure for many years to come,” he concluded.
