Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela Lands Arrested Top Cop Shadrack Sibiya in Hot Water Over Alleged Witness Contact

Controversial Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela has reportedly landed suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya in deeper legal trouble following a shocking revelation in court.

It has emerged during court proceedings that after Sibiya’s high-profile arrest on serious sexual offence charges, Maumela allegedly contacted the woman who laid the charges against the top cop.

The state has previously voiced strong concerns regarding witness intimidation and interference, which has heavily impacted Sibiya’s ongoing bail application at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.

In an attempt to manage the fallout, Sibiya’s son has explicitly distanced the family from the Bishop’s actions.

The son stated that the family never instructed or sent Bishop Maumela to approach the complainant.

This development leaves the Bishop solely exposed to allegations of attempting to intimidate or improperly influence the key witness in the state’s case.

This revelation follows a series of controversial public maneuvers by the Maumela, who was with Sibiya at a Sandton venue when the tactical units arrested him, initially launched a fierce public defense.

Speaking to journalists outside court, he claimed Sibiya was a “child of God” and alleged that the arrest was merely a political smear campaign linked to an internal SAPS boardroom succession battle.

However, following a severe public backlash and warnings from legal experts regarding the sensitivity of a case involving a minor, Maumela issued an unreserved apology and retracted his conspiracy claims.

Sibiya faces five severe charges, including rape, human trafficking, and the sexual grooming of a child.

The state continues to oppose bail, citing the high risk of witness interference—a concern that has now been intensified by the actions of his close associate, Maumela.

Sibiya remains in custody as the formal bail proceedings and separate expedited SAPS disciplinary processes move forward.
