Baartman grateful for Da Cruz’s belief
Kaizer Chiefs youngster Luke Baartman says he is grateful for the faith shown in him by new coach Fernando Da Cruz and his technical team.
The 20-year-old forward has been a key part of Chiefs’ strong start to the Betway Premiership season. Baartman has started all three league matches this season.
He also scored his first goal for the club in their 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United. “It has been a good start to the season. It’s always great to win early on to bolster the momentum of the team,” Baartman told Chiefs media.
“I just want to thank the coach and his technical team for giving me the opportunity to start the game and believing in me. “Scoring the goal was a very proud moment for me. I am grateful to my teammates for helping me to get my first goal and I wish to score many more.”
Baartman joined Chiefs last season as a free agent after Cape Town Spurs were relegated to the ABC Motsepe League. He struggled for regular game time last season. He made only seven appearances across all competitions.
Things have changed under Da Cruz. The young forward now appears to be an important part of the French coach’s plans. He was also trusted to start against African champions Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.
That match ended in a 1-1 draw. Chiefs’ early MTN8 exit remains their only major disappointment this season. They will not play this weekend. The break gives Da Cruz more time to prepare his team for their next Betway Premiership match.
Chiefs will travel to Richards Bay FC on August 26.
