ANC RECALLS THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR OF MADIBENG AND REAFFIRMS THAT THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE COME FIRST

ANC

The African National Congress has recalled Douglas Seleke Maimane from his deployment as Executive Mayor and Proportional Representation Councillor of the Madibeng Local Municipality, with immediate effect.

The recall, taken by the ANC North West Provincial Executive Committee, has the concurrence and authority of the Office of the Secretary General.

According to reports, the ANC Caucus in Madibeng will implement and give effect to the decision through the lawful processes of the Council.

“The ANC deploys its cadres to serve the people and not to serve themselves. A deployment to public office is a responsibility held on behalf of our communities, and it is held only for as long as the cadre advances the movement’s mandate. Where that mandate is not advanced, the movement will act accordingly. No individual ambition will be allowed to stand above the needs of the people.

“The discipline of all ANC councillors and public representatives is under careful watch. A three-line whip applies in every council and caucus, and the line of march of the movement obtains. Our public representatives are expected to function within the discipline of the caucus, to account to the structures of the movement, and to keep faith with the communities who elected them. This standard will be applied consistently, and without fear or favour,” the statement reads.

The ANC municipalities must work, and they must be singularly focused on the needs of the people: the delivery of basic services, the creation of jobs and economic opportunity, and the safety of our communities. Roads must be maintained, water and electricity must flow, refuse must be collected, and our towns and townships must be kept clean and safe.

“These are not favours to be granted; they are the rightful expectations of the people. This call is directed not only to our public representatives but equally to the public servants who administer our municipalities. The administration exists to serve the public. We expect officials to discharge their statutory duties diligently, to safeguard public resources, and to place the residents they serve at the centre of every decision. Political leadership and administration must work together, in a common purpose, for the people.

The African National Congress was founded in 1912 to serve the people of this country. The local sphere of government is where that service is tested most directly. The ANC will continue to take the decisions necessary to ensure that our municipalities serve the people first, and that the discipline of the movement is upheld in every structure,” the statement reads.
