ANC Ekurhuleni calls for impartial probe into DA Councillor’s murder and kidnapping charges
The ANC in Ekurhuleni has expressed grave concern following the arrest of Democratic Alliance (DA) PR Councillor Kabelo Mabonko, who is facing charges of murder and kidnapping.
Mabonko, 40, from Vosloorus, appeared before the Benoni Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, following her arrest on Monday in Crystal Park.
It is alleged that Mabonko tracked down two men whom she suspected of burglarising her residence earlier this month. The two men were allegedly subjected to torture, with one of them later succumbing to his injuries.
In a statement, ANC Ekurhuleni Regional Secretary Jongizizwe Dlabathi said the allegations were extremely serious and stressed that no person, regardless of political affiliation or public position, had the right to take the law into their own hands.
“The ANC Ekurhuleni calls on the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that the matter is thoroughly and impartially investigated without fear, favour or political interference,” Dlabathi said.
He added that if investigations establish criminal wrongdoing, those responsible must face the full might of the law. The ANC said councillors, as elected public representatives, have a responsibility to uphold the Constitution, respect the rule of law and demonstrate responsible leadership.
It also called on political parties not to shield their members from accountability.
“The ANC Ekurhuleni respects the independence of the courts and will not pre-empt the outcome of the legal process. However, we firmly maintain that justice must be served and due process must be followed within the law,” Dlabathi said.
The party reiterated that no one is above the law and called for justice to prevail as the legal process unfolds.
