Media Statement POLOKWANE – A 38-year-old male accused, Jerry Butibuti Khoza, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for murder, and was further declared unfit to possess a firearm, by the Polokwane High Court, on Thursday, 23 January 2025. The accused’s conviction and sentencing emanates from an incident wherein he stabbed his wife, aged 32, multiple times on the neck, to death using a self-made knife on 07 March 2024 at about 13:30, following a heated argument. The incident occurred at Dan Village, Extension 2 (Mokgoloboto RDP) in Ritavi policing area. The court heard that the deceased and her husband were separated during the incident, and the deceased was at the accused’s residence to collect the children’s support money. Subsequent to the incident the accused tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous substance, and he was fortunately taken to hospital in time by paramedics. Police opened a case of murder against him and he was arrested. The case was assigned to Detective Constable Amukelani Rikhotso for further investigation. The accused was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment. The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Hadebe, has welcomed the court outcome of 20 years’ imprisonment handed down against the accused, as gender based violence cases remain a challenge in many households, in the province and the country.
