Dedicated Free State SAPS Spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli Honoured in Moving Memorial Service
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State gathered at Bobbiespark in Bloemfontein today to celebrate the remarkable life, legacy, and unwavering dedication of Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli.
Kareli, a seasoned spokesperson and highly respected member of the Provincial Corporate Communication and Liaison Component, was remembered by SAPS leadership, colleagues, journalists, and his family as a consummate professional who served his country until the very end.
Welcoming attendees, Parkweg Station Commander Brigadier Teboho Jacobs described the gathering as a celebration of a life well lived. “Sergeant Kareli performed his work to the fullest,” Jacobs noted, setting a tone of deep gratitude for Kareli’s contributions to the police service.
Colleagues and friends shared emotional tributes, highlighting Kareli’s unique blend of professionalism, warmth, and quiet humour.
SAC Lehlohonolo Mathabeng spoke fondly of Kareli’s gentle nature and his profound love for his family, particularly his young son, Phahamo.
Renowned Lesedi FM presenter and media personality Thuso Motaung sent a heartfelt video message, praising Kareli as a soft-spoken, incredibly reliable partner to the press who was always ready to assist at any hour.
The memorial laid bare Kareli’s unparalleled commitment to public service, which did not waver even during his final days.
Colonel Mamiki Moeketsi revealed that Kareli continued to manage his communication duties directly from his hospital bed.
“Even while lying in hospital, he was still doing his 04:00 interviews. He would continue to write statements even when he was sick,” Moeketsi shared.
Former Corporate Communication and Liaison Head, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, remembered him as a “Good Samaritan” who simply could not ignore people in distress.
Makhele recalled an incident on the N1 National Road where Kareli insisted on stopping in the pitch darkness to rescue people trapped inside a crashed vehicle, despite the team being in a rush.
Speaking on behalf of Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Solomon Lesia and senior leadership, the current Provincial Head of Corporate Communication, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, emphasised how Kareli redefined the role of a police communicator.
“We remember Sergeant Kareli as a dedicated member of SAPS whose presence touched the lives of many people,” Brigadier Mbambo stated. “He understood that policing is not only about responding to crime, but also about communicating with the media and informing the community with confidence.”
The South African Police Service has extended its deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Kareli’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Leadership affirmed that his legacy of disciplined, selfless, and diligent service will remain a lasting source of inspiration for the entire organization.
