SAPS Rejects DA’s R500,000 Top-Up Reward for Ekurhuleni Murders Probe
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has firmly rejected a R500,000 cash reward offer made by the Democratic Alliance (DA), stating that the state will not be drawn into political matters.
Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili clarified the police’s stance on Thirsday explaining that law enforcement cannot accept or combine funds from a political party.
“This is a state issue,” Mosikili stated during a media briefing.
“I don’t know what they are combining, but it cannot be combined. It has never been done before.”
She added that the police do not know the specific intentions or conditions behind the opposition party’s monetary pledge and must remain independent of political influence.
The DA’s financial gesture followed an announcement by Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane, who put forward an official R400,000 state reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a horrific string of murders in Ekurhuleni.
The DA’s proposed top-up would have brought the total bounty to R900,000.
The DA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane, previously mentioned that the party’s intention was to supplement law enforcement’s efforts and that the money would only be released directly to informants upon a successful criminal prosecution, rather than handed over to the police directly.
