Woman’s body found in Copesville sparks calls for urgent police probe
PIETERMARITZBURG: The discovery of a woman’s body in Copesville, Ward 29, has prompted calls for a swift police investigation and increased visibility of law enforcement in the area.
The body was discovered on Tuesday, with the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death yet to be established.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Msunduzi Constituency has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other law-enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible, if foul play is established, are brought to justice.
The IFP extended its condolences to the deceased woman’s family, friends and loved ones.
“This senseless loss of life must not simply become another statistic. The people of Ward 29 deserve to live in communities where women and girls can walk, work and return home without fear for their safety,” the party said.
The party also raised concerns about conditions in parts of Copesville, particularly inadequate electricity supply and overgrown vegetation in open spaces.
According to the IFP, poorly maintained areas and insufficient lighting can create safety concerns by reducing visibility, particularly at night.
The party called on the Msunduzi Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Department to urgently clear overgrown vegetation and address neglected open spaces in Ward 29.
The IFP Women’s Brigade in Msunduzi has also called on the Mountain Rise SAPS station commander to deploy visible police units to Ward 29, particularly in areas identified by residents as vulnerable.
“Visible and regular police patrols can assist in deterring criminal activity, responding to incidents and restoring confidence among residents,” the party said.
The IFP said the incident should prompt authorities to address both the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and broader community safety concerns.
“We demand justice for the deceased. We demand action from law enforcement. We demand safer communities for women and girls,” the party said.
