Two killed in N2 head-on crash involving truck carrying chemicals
JOZINI: Two people have died and a child under the age of one has been injured following a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Polo and an articulated truck carrying Class 3 chemicals on the N2 between the Jozini Turnoff and Mkuze Bridge.
The fatal crash occurred when the Polo, which was travelling from the direction of Mkuze towards Jozini, allegedly lost control and veered into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with the truck travelling in the opposite direction.
A male and female occupant of the Polo were killed in the collision.
A child, believed to be less than a year old, survived the crash but sustained injuries. The truck driver was also injured.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, where rescue personnel, traffic officials and forensic teams were attending to the incident.
The N2 has been closed to traffic in the affected section to allow forensic investigators to examine the crash scene. Authorities said the investigation was expected to take approximately three hours, while stop-and-go traffic control was also being implemented.
Motorists travelling between Empangeni, Pongola and Jozini have been urged to use alternative routes while the N2 remains closed.
Those travelling from Empangeni towards Pongola or Jozini can use the Ubombo Road from Mkuze to Jozini before rejoining the N2.
Motorists travelling from Pongola towards Empangeni can travel via Jozini and Ubombo Road to Mkuze before joining the N2.
The municipality has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased.
Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, remain patient and follow instructions from traffic officials while emergency and forensic operations continue at the scene.
