Limpopo traffic officers reject R100 000 bribe during medicine seizure
POLOKWANE — Two Limpopo Provincial Inspectors have been commended for rejecting a R100 000 bribe after intercepting a vehicle allegedly transporting medicine without the required pharmaceutical licence or certificate in the Masisi area of Vhembe District.
Inspector Khubana and Inspector Nwendamutswu were conducting a stop-and-check operation when they intercepted the vehicle, which was carrying four people — two Zimbabwean nationals and two South Africans.
The occupants were handed over to police at Malamulele Police Station, where a case was registered under CAS 293/09/2026.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the suspects allegedly attempted to avoid arrest by offering the two inspectors R100 000.
The inspectors refused the offer and proceeded to make an additional arrest for bribery.
MEC for Transport and Community Safety Nakedi Kekana praised the officers for what she described as their dedication, integrity and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“The actions of Inspector Khubana and Inspector Nwendamutswu resonate deeply with the message I shared with the employees of Vhembe District on Tuesday afternoon, that I will always support and defend employees who are loyal to the Provincial Government and, most importantly, to the people of Limpopo,” Kekana said.
“These officers are a shining example of what it means to serve with loyalty and integrity. They chose the people of Limpopo over personal enrichment. We need more public servants like them.”
Kekana said the officers had demonstrated that traffic officials could play an important role in combating crime and corruption on provincial roads.
She also warned against the transportation of medicine without the necessary pharmaceutical certification, saying it posed a serious risk to the health and safety of communities.
The MEC said she would engage the Limpopo Provincial Commissioner to ensure that the two inspectors are formally recognised for their work.
The suspects are expected to face the relevant charges as police investigations continue.
