Ramalatso Elected First Female Mayor of Greater Letaba
GREATER LETABA: Greater Letaba Municipality has made history with the election of Councillor Rosina Ramalatso as its first female Mayor.
Ramalatso was elected unopposed during a special council sitting held at the municipal council chambers on Tuesday, following the resignation of former mayor Dagma Mamanyoha.
Her election was met with ululation and jubilation from councillors, marking a significant moment in the municipality’s political history.
Mamanyoha recently resigned as both Mayor and a member of the municipal council, creating a vacancy in the municipality’s political leadership.
Ramalatso brings extensive experience in local government politics to the mayoral office. She previously served as the municipality’s council whip and speaker before becoming a member of the Executive Committee (EXCO).
Her political career also includes leadership roles in the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League. She is reported to have served three terms as Regional Secretary of the ANC Women’s League in the Norman Mashabane Region.
Her election places her at the centre of a significant leadership transition in the municipality and the wider Mopani political landscape.
Mamanyoha is expected to take up the position of Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality following his departure from Greater Letaba.
Meanwhile, former EXCO member Councillor Regina Maake was also elected unopposed as the new council whip.
The election of Ramalatso and Maake was welcomed by councillors, with the two women being elevated to key political leadership positions in the municipality.
Ramalatso is now expected to provide political leadership to Greater Letaba and oversee the implementation of council priorities, including service delivery programmes and other municipal initiatives.
Her appointment also places her in a position to lead the municipality through the remainder of its current political term as it responds to the leadership changes brought about by Mamanyoha’s departure.
