Death Threats Reported Ahead of SAFA Leadership Election

The South African Football Association (SAFA) says several delegates have received death threats, while others have allegedly been harassed and intimidated ahead of today Saturday’s Elective Congress at Vodacom World in Midrand.

SAFA said the threats would be reported to the police and that security around the venue had been tightened. The association described the incidents as an escalation following earlier attempts to disrupt the election.

The election pits incumbent president Danny Jordaan against AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu, who is challenging for the presidency after months of campaigning marked by disputes over voting regions and the electoral process.

SAFA said the congress would proceed and that members’ right to elect their leadership would be protected.
