Escaped Prisoner Edward Khomotso Madiba Apprehended in Brits
Escaped prisoner Edward Khomotso Madiba has been apprehended in Brits, North West.
Information provided to MDNtv indicates that Madiba was apprehended at approximately 10pm on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, following an extensive search involving the South African Police Service, the Department of Correctional Services and rangers from the Borakalalo National Park.
Madiba is reportedly being detained at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. SAPS and Correctional Services have not yet released their anticipated joint statement confirming the circumstances surrounding his apprehension.
The search intensified after Madiba was reportedly spotted in Fafung, near Jericho, on Tuesday.
Information obtained by MDNtv indicates that Expanded Public Works Programme workers recognised Madiba after he got off a bus near a local tavern. He was reportedly wearing a blue work suit and a hat.
After apparently realising that he had been recognised, Madiba allegedly disappeared into the nearby veld.
Police were called to the area and a drone was deployed to assist with the search. Members of the Hartbeespoort K9 Unit were also called in and searched the veld until late on Tuesday evening, but Madiba was not apprehended at the time.
MDNtv has also received information suggesting that Madiba may have had access to a cellphone while evading authorities. This information has not yet been independently confirmed.
Madiba escaped from Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng on Sunday, 6 September 2026. He was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, and violating parole conditions.
The escape prompted Correctional Services to launch an investigation, while eight officials were served with notices of contemplated suspension.
