Grade 7 learner dies after electrocution at Limpopo school
A Grade 7 learner has died after being electrocuted at Mokutupi Primary School in Marironi Village, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.
The incident happened during lunch break on Thursday, 3 September, next to mobile classrooms on the school premises in the Mopani West Education District. The child’s name has not been released.
Staff called emergency medical services and a teacher was sent to inform the learner’s parents. The School Governing Body was also notified. Paramedics attended to the child but certified the learner dead at the scene.
Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said she had learnt of the death with shock and sent condolences to the family. Department spokespersons said officials were working with relevant authorities to establish the full circumstances.
The department said further assessments would be carried out at the school to protect learners and staff, and that psychosocial support would be provided to those affected. It urged the school community to remain calm while the investigation continues.
No official finding has yet been released on how the child came into contact with live electricity.
