Hitmen get life for murder of uMngeni DA chief whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu
Two men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of uMngeni Democratic Alliance chief whip and councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, in what police have called another major breakthrough against politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Khayelihle Shabalala and Thabo Mathonsi pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court to conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu. Magistrate Morné Cannon imposed the prescribed life sentence on Thursday, 3 September 2026, finding no substantial and compelling circumstances to deviate from the minimum.
Ndlovu was shot dead at his home in Mpophomeni on 5 December 2023, in front of his wife and children. Police say Shabalala was the gunman and Mathonsi helped coordinate the hit from prison. The court heard the killing was planned over about 10 months and that the pair were contract killers paid R30,000.
The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team led the investigation. Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane welcomed the sentences, saying they send a warning that political violence will not be tolerated ahead of local government elections.
Three other suspects remain before the courts. They include alleged mastermind Chief Simphiwe Zuma of the Nxamalala tribal authority, who police say ordered the killing of his nephew, alleged spotter Thobani Hlongwa, and Mnelizi Zuma, arrested last week in Mpophomeni. The Democratic Alliance welcomed the life terms.
