The High Court has sentenced serial killer Rassie Nkuna and dismissed police officer Jacob Chego to four life imprisonment terms each for the brutal March 2022 murders of Sabeiliwe Mogashoa and her husband.

The two convicts faced a collective 12 counts, including conspiracy to commit murder, murder, kidnapping, fraud, and other serious offences.

The investigation revealed that Nkuna and Chego conspired to lure the couple before executing them to steal their motor vehicle.

The murders were marked by extreme cruelty, occurring in full view of the couple’s eight-year-old son and one-year-old daughter.

At the time of her death, Sabeiliwe Mogashoa was also six months pregnant.

The parents of the deceased, Rachel and Dumisani Zwane, were present in court and welcomed the harsh sentence, expressing relief that justice had finally been served for their late children and orphaned grandchildren.

Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, highly commended the multi-disciplinary investigating team for bringing the complex case to a successful conclusion.

Dimpane singled out the lead investigating officer for praise, alongside key members of the Gauteng Tracking Teams: Sergeant Nkosingphile Mathenjwa (Gauteng Murder and Robbery Unit), Sergeant Mpho Mutshekwane, Warrant Officer Lindokuhle Dlame, Warrant Officer Curtis Mathabela and Sergeant Vuledzani Netshituni.

“Today’s judgment brings a measure of justice and accountability,” Dimpane stated, while extending deepest condolences to the Mogashoa family.

Dimpane expressed deep concern over the involvement of Chego, a former SAPS member, reiterating that the police service will not harbor criminals within its ranks.

“When a police officer betrays that trust and becomes involved in serious criminality, it undermines the very principles we stand for,” Dimpane warned. “We will not protect members who choose to break the law.”
