Faiz Abrahams did not need long to make his presence felt in a Kaizer Chiefs shirt.

The 21-year-old midfielder made his debut for the Soweto giants on Wednesday night, coming off the bench during their encounter with Richards Bay in Durban and quickly finding himself at the centre of Chiefs’ attempt to turn the match around.

Abrahams was introduced in the second half and played 24 minutes, marking his first appearance for Chiefs since joining the club on loan from Stellenbosch earlier this month.

The loan deal runs until the end of the season, with Chiefs holding an option to sign the left-footed player on a permanent basis should he impress during his spell.

For Abrahams, the opportunity represented an important first step.

“It was my first time out with Kaizer Chiefs,” he said. “It was great to be part of the team, and I’m grateful for the chance the coach gave me.”

Da Cruz Gives Abrahams Clear Instructions

Abrahams revealed that coach Fernando Da Cruz gave him a specific task when he entered the match.

With Chiefs searching for a way back into the contest, the youngster was instructed to use his creativity and help create opportunities in attack.

“The coach said I should create chances so we could get back into the game,” Abrahams said.

“I think I created a few chances that we could have made use of.”

Chiefs eventually found their way back into the match, with Siphesihle Ndlovu scoring late to give the visitors a chance of taking something from the encounter.

For Abrahams, however, the result did not reflect what he felt Chiefs produced on the night.

Abrahams: Chiefs Deserved to Win

Despite the difficult conditions in Durban, Abrahams believes Chiefs did enough to take all three points.

The young midfielder felt missed opportunities ultimately prevented the team from getting the result their performance deserved.

“We played well enough to win the match, but we had a bit of bad luck,” he said.

The weather also played a role in making the contest more difficult.

Rain and strong winds created challenging conditions, affecting the way the players handled the ball and built attacks.

“The wind made things difficult. The ball was slippery, and it was hard to control it,” Abrahams said.

Chiefs Loan Move Gives Abrahams Chance to Prove Himself

Abrahams now faces a potentially important period in his career.

His loan move from Stellenbosch gives him an opportunity to establish himself at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs, while Chiefs’ option to make the move permanent adds another layer to his spell.

For now, the midfielder is focused on earning more opportunities rather than looking too far ahead.

He knows consistency will be crucial if he wants to remain involved and convince the club that he deserves a longer-term place in the squad.

“I’m going to work hard to keep myself at a high level,” he said.

“Maintaining consistency is important. You need to stay at a high level every time you step onto the pitch.”

His debut may have lasted only 24 minutes, but Abrahams has now taken the first step towards making his mark at Chiefs.

The challenge will be turning that promising introduction into a sustained run of performances as the season progresses.
