TMPD officer and his attorney wife to apply for a bail at the Polokwane magistrate today.

A Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer and his attorney wife are expected back in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on Friday

A Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer and his attorney wife are expected back in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on Friday for a bail application after they were arrested in connection with allegations involving approximately R1.75 million allegedly taken from two deceased estates.

TMPD officer Peter Nonyane, 36, popularly known as “Greater Gagash Municipality” or “Gagash”, and his wife, attorney Charlotte Tibana, 33, face charges including fraud, theft and money laundering.

Nonyane was arrested by the Hawks in Pretoria on 14 August 2026, while Tibana handed herself over to authorities in Polokwane on 17 August.

The couple appeared before the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on the same day and were remanded in custody pending their bail application.

According to the Hawks, the investigation centres on transactions allegedly carried out on 28 October 2024.

Investigators allege that funds belonging to two deceased Estates ( Mathabatha and Masha ) were unlawfully transferred and subsequently used in transactions linked to the purchase of a pre-owned Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 at McCarthy Mercedes-Benz Wonderboom in Pretoria.

The State alleges that payments of approximately R1.65 million and R100,000 were made to the dealership. Investigators further allege that approximately R1.75 million was ultimately withdrawn from the estates and that portions of the money were deposited into Nonyane’s bank account.

Tibana, who is an attorney and executor of the estates, is accused by the State of having authorised or facilitated transfers from the estate accounts. Prosecutors allege that the couple acted with a common purpose in the transactions.

HOW MANY UNITS ARE INVOLVED IN THIS CASE

The matter was investigated by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Limpopo after concerns were raised about the movement of funds from the deceased estates.

Nonyane’s arrest was carried out in Pretoria during an operation involving several law-enforcement units, including the Hawks, Pretoria K9 Unit, Pretoria Flying Squad and other specialised teams.

The Hawks said warrants of arrest were issued after the investigation was completed sufficiently for the matter to be placed before the State Advocate for a decision to prosecute.

TSHWANE METRO DEPARTMENT POLICE DEPARTMENT

TMPD internal investigation
The criminal case has also triggered an internal investigation by the Tshwane Metro Police Department.

The TMPD confirmed Nonyane’s arrest and said it had opened an internal disciplinary investigation. The department is also considering possible suspension of the officer while the internal and external investigations continue.

TMPD spokesperson Colonel Isaac Mahamba said the department maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards criminality and misconduct among its members.

The department has indicated that it will cooperate with the Hawks but will not comment extensively while the criminal and disciplinary processes are underway.

“GAGASH” FLUSHY LIFESTYLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MAV ATTORNEYS

Nonyane’s public profile has also attracted attention following his arrest. He has been known on social media for showcasing an affluent lifestyle, including luxury clothing, vehicles and other high-value possessions.

However, reports have cautioned that photographs and videos showing his lifestyle do not by themselves establish that those assets were purchased with money from the deceased estates.

Any alleged connection between those assets and the criminal investigation remains a matter for investigators and the courts to establish.

A Pretoria law firm, Matimba Austin Vukeya Attorneys, has also publicly distanced itself from Nonyane following references to the firm in discussions surrounding the case.

In a statement, the firm outlined that Nonyane had previously been a client of the firm in relation to a Road Accident Fund matter.

According to the firm, that matter was partially finalised in 2025 and the payment associated with it was processed through the normal legal process.
MAV Attorneys said it has no knowledge of or involvement in the circumstances underlying the current fraud and money-laundering allegations and remains willing to provide information to investigators if required.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON FRIDAY

Nonyane and Tibana remain in custody pending Friday’s proceedings.

The court presided by the Chief Magistrate is expected to consider arguments from both the State and the defence before deciding whether the couple should be released on bail while investigations and the criminal case continue.
