About 80 anti-illegal foreign nationals marchers held up at a police station in Greytown
At least eighty (80) people who were part of an anti-illegal foreigners march are currently held up at a police station in Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) for questioning and further investigation after the march they were part of turned violent, leaving at least three foreign nationals injured.
KZN SAPS Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said information at this stage suggests that people were marching in Kranskop when the march turned violent.
“Reports indicate that shops were looted and three foreign nationals were injured. Two of the injured victims are receiving medical attention at a hospital, whereas the third victim is yet to be located.
“After the violence, the marchers reportedly got into a bus and intelligence was that they were going to march in Greytown. An operation was set up and the bus they were travelling in was stopped on the R74 road towards Greytown,” he said.
Nentshuinda said preliminary investigations indicate that the victims are in the country legally, however their immigration status will be verified by the Department of Home Affairs.
“Police are also investigating reports that one of the victims was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money during the violence.
Police are reiterating the call that those who want to march for any course must to so within the ambits of the law and that they must not take the law into their own hands,” he said.
Nentshuinda said no civilians are allowed to do door-to-door operations, and only law enforcement officers can conduct stop and searches and effect arrest on any kind of crime.
“Police will continue to work with protesters who respect the law and are willing to cooperate with law enforcement officers,” he said.
