Maboloka Erupts: Community demands justice as crime-accused councillor allegedly flouts bail conditions
A standard court appearance has ignited a firestorm of community fury in Maboloka in the North West, where seething residents allege that a local councillor facing severe criminal charges is openly defying court orders and showing flagrant disrespect to their officially recognised traditional leader.
Ward Councillor John “MJ” Ratele, popularly known as Papi, appeared in court today in connection with charges including arson, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, and theft.
These violent allegations have deeply shaken a community already fractured by a decades-long leadership dispute.
The court previously granted Ratele bail under strict conditions, which explicitly prohibited him from addressing the public.
However, residents claim he has flagrantly violated this order by speaking at community gatherings and acting in a manner they describe as utterly contemptuous toward the recognised traditional leader, Chief Tumo Tsajoa.
“How can a person facing such serious charges continue to lead our community?” asked one frustrated resident, echoing a sentiment shared by many in attendance. Because Ratele holds a position of public trust as a government representative, residents feel his alleged defiance is a direct insult to the community.
This friction is deeply intertwined with the Maboloka chieftaincy dispute between the Tsajoa and Lion families—a painful conflict spanning over six decades that has frequently resulted in legal battles, protests, and violence.
In August 2019, the North West High Court ruled decisively in favour of the Tsajoa family, declaring them the rightful custodians of the chieftaincy.
Today, the community stands firmly behind this ruling, supporting Chief Tumo Tsajoa and demanding that all parties respect the judiciary’s decision.
Formalising their grievances, community members submitted an official complaint to the court today.
They accuse Ratele of breaching his bail conditions and displaying total contempt for the traditional leadership.
Residents feel that Ratele’s political status has left him under the impression that he is above the law.
“Do councillors have so much power that they can violate bail conditions simply because they are government representatives?” questioned another resident.
Tsajoa has reportedly expressed feeling deeply disrespected by Ratele’s actions.
Community representatives argue that the councillor refuses to accept the reality of shared governance, stating,
“He cannot accept that they are both leaders. He needs to work alongside the traditional leadership if this community is ever going to receive proper service delivery.“
Acknowledging the community’s formal complaints, the court has postponed the case to 4 December 2026 for trial.
For a community demanding immediate intervention, this lengthy delay feels entirely unacceptable.
Exasperated by the timeline and the councillor’s ongoing conduct, the community has passed a unified resolution: they are demanding that the court immediately revoke Ratele’s bail and remand him in custody.
They argue that his alleged violation of court-mandated conditions proves he cannot be trusted and represents a direct challenge to the authority of the judicial system.
“We are tired of being bullied by this councillor,” residents declared, encapsulating a shared mix of anger, betrayal, and a desperate plea for accountability.
The next step in this volatile dispute now rests entirely with the justice system.
The community waits to see whether the court will protect its own authority and address these alleged bail violations, or if the long wait for trial will further embolden a leader they accuse of operating entirely outside the law.
