Thapelo Maseko Transfer News: Sundowns Push Winger Towards European Move

Thapelo Maseko transfer news, Mamelodi Sundowns news

Thapelo Maseko’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns appears to be heading towards a crossroads, with the club reportedly pushing the talented winger towards an overseas move rather than allowing him to join a domestic rival.

The 21 year old speedster has found himself on the fringes of the first team under new head coach Miguel Cardoso, a situation highlighted by his omission from Sundowns’ pre season tour of Austria.

With his role at Chloorkop uncertain, the Brazilians have reportedly given Maseko permission to explore opportunities abroad, either through a loan deal or a permanent transfer.

The decision comes after the winger returned from a difficult loan spell at Cypriot club AEL Limassol. Although the club expressed interest in retaining him, the proposed move collapsed amid salary payment disputes that have since been referred to FIFA.

According to SABC Sport, Maseko remains cautious about repeating a similar experience and is carefully considering his next step. Sundowns are believed to be supporting a move outside South Africa, as the club does not want to strengthen another Betway Premiership competitor by releasing one of their promising talents locally.

From World Cup hero to uncertain club future

Maseko’s reputation grew significantly after his memorable performances for Bafana Bafana at the World Cup, where he scored the decisive goal against South Korea to help South Africa progress to the Round of 32.

That moment appeared to signal the arrival of one of the country’s most exciting young attacking players. However, injuries and limited opportunities have slowed his momentum since joining Sundowns in 2023.

Despite those setbacks, the winger’s pace, direct running and attacking ability continue to attract interest. Sundowns still value his potential and are unlikely to approve a move unless the financial terms meet their expectations.

Sundowns weighing loan or permanent transfer options

The Tshwane giants are now waiting to see whether a suitable overseas club will make a permanent offer or pursue a loan arrangement with an option to buy.

For Maseko, the priority is finding a destination where he can rebuild confidence, secure regular playing time and continue his development at a crucial stage of his career.

His time at Sundowns has not unfolded as many expected when he arrived, but his ability remains highly regarded. With the club preferring an international solution, the next chapter of Maseko’s career could soon take place away from South African football.
